How long is a learner's licence valid?

24 months, no extensions, and why that window is tighter than it sounds.

A learner’s licence in South Africa is valid for 24 months, and it cannot be extended.

That is the whole answer, but the consequences are worth spelling out, because they catch people every year.

There is no renewal

You cannot extend a learner’s licence, and you cannot renew it. Those options do not exist.

If your learner’s expires before you have obtained your driving licence, the only route forward is to apply again and write the learner’s test again, from the beginning. New booking, new fee, new test.

Why 24 months is tighter than it sounds

Two years feels like plenty of time to learn to drive, and for the driving part it usually is. The problem is not learning. It is waiting.

Driving test appointments are booked well in advance in many areas, and in busy centres the wait can run to several months. If you leave booking your driving test until you feel ready, the earliest available date may already be past your expiry.

The practical advice that follows from this: book your driving test early, and work backwards from that date. Do not wait until you feel prepared to start looking for a slot. Find out what the waiting time is at your testing centre as soon as you have your learner’s, and plan around it.

What the learner’s licence lets you do

While it is valid, a learner’s licence permits you to drive on a public road under supervision. It is a permit to learn, not a licence to drive independently, and the supervision requirement is a legal condition rather than a suggestion.

It does not become a driving licence on its own or by the passage of time. You have to pass the driving test.

If it has already expired

There is no appeal or grace mechanism. Apply again and rewrite.

The one consolation is that the material has not changed, so a rewrite is much less work than the first attempt was. If you passed once, you can pass again, and you already know the shape of the paper.

How to apply for a learner’s licence covers what you need to bring, and a full mock test will tell you fairly quickly how much of it you have retained.
